Your rights as a homeowner
Solar is a big purchase. Here is what the law gives you, and what we do on our side. Private company. Not a government program, not your utility.
Before you sign
- Take your time. Take the proposal home. You don’t have to sign anything today.
- Get it in writing. Check that your contract lists the price, the equipment, what’s included, the warranties and the timeline. Don’t rely on promises that aren’t in the contract.
- Check the license. Ask for our license or registration number for your state and check it with the state agency. See Licenses.
- Nobody from us will say we’re from the government or your utility. We’re a private company, and you pay for your system.
Your right to cancel
Everywhere: the FTC Cooling-Off Rule
If you buy at your home, or at a place that isn’t the seller’s usual place of business, federal law gives you until midnight of the third business day after the sale to cancel. It doesn’t cover sales made entirely by phone, mail or online. It applies to sales of $25 or more at your home and $130 or more at other places. The seller must give you a cancellation form with your contract and refund your money within 10 business days after you cancel.
States with their own rules
Some states add their own rules. If your state gives you more time, the longer period applies. Below are the state rules we have confirmed so far.
| State | Your right to cancel | Law |
|---|---|---|
| Texas | 5 business days after you sign, for any residential solar sale. Cancel by written notice. | Texas Occupations Code §1806.156 |
| California | 3 business days for contracts signed at your home — 5 business days if you’re 65 or older. | Civil Code §1689.6; CSLB |
How to cancel
Send a signed, written notice before the deadline to the address in your contract, and keep a copy. You don’t have to give a reason.
Warranty and service
- Our work: 25 years on our installation and on the roof around it, in writing.
- Equipment: your panels, inverters and batteries are covered by their makers’ warranties, under each maker’s terms. Some — Tesla, FranklinWH, REC ProTrust — require a certified installer and product registration. Check the final warranty documents before you sign.
Calls
When you ask for an estimate, we call you by hand, during calling hours in your state. We don’t text, and we don’t use autodialers. Tell us at any time that you don’t want more calls, and we stop. You can also add your number to the National Do Not Call Registry at donotcall.gov.
If something goes wrong
- Talk to us first. Call (555) 000-2322 or email [email protected]. Most problems we can fix together.
- Your state’s licensing agency handles complaints about contractors’ work. See Licenses.
- Your state attorney general’s consumer protection office handles complaints about sales and contracts.
- The Federal Trade Commission takes reports at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
